The main growth channels — from content and SEO to partnerships, referrals and launch strategy.
Marketing and growth are not the same thing
Marketing helps the right person notice and understand a project. Growth is the wider system: how they discover it, try it, reach value, pay, return and recommend it. A channel that generates attention but no activation or retention is not a growth engine.
Start where the audience already exists
Channel choice becomes much easier when the audience is concrete. If you cannot name where those people gather, what they search for, whom they trust or how they currently buy alternatives, choosing between TikTok, SEO, cold email or partnerships is mostly guesswork.
Pre-launch should create evidence, not only hype
Before launch, talk to potential users, collect a small relevant waitlist, run demos or pilots and let people test the core idea. A hundred people who genuinely have the problem and are waiting for a specific solution can be more valuable than ten thousand random visitors.
A good launch then becomes a sequence rather than one dramatic day: warm up the audience, open to a controlled group, collect proof, improve the message, then widen distribution.
Own at least one direct relationship
Social audiences sit on platforms whose rules and algorithms can change. An email list is slower and less glamorous, but it gives you a direct way to reach people who have already shown interest. In early B2B, cold email and direct messages can be even more effective because the founder can contact a precise person without a large audience.
Use channels that match the way people buy
Communities such as Reddit, Hacker News and niche forums can provide early users and feedback, but they punish obvious self-promotion. Product Hunt can be useful for technology audiences, but it is not a universal sales channel. Partnerships and integrations are powerful when another organisation already has the audience you need.
Affiliate programmes reward partners for sales. Referral programmes turn existing users into recommenders. Viral loops go further by making the project’s normal use naturally expose it to the next person.
Content, SEO and free tools can compound
Useful articles, videos, calculators, templates and case studies can answer questions before a purchase. SEO is strongest when the audience already searches for the problem. AI search adds another discovery layer: content may be summarised or cited even when the user does not click a traditional result.
Programmatic SEO can create many useful pages from structured data, but only when each page has real distinct value. A free tool can sometimes be a better acquisition asset than another generic article.
Paid ads buy speed; product-led growth uses the project itself
Ads can test audiences and messages quickly, but the economics must support acquisition cost. Product-led growth works when users can experience value with little sales assistance and the project itself drives activation, expansion or sharing. Community-led growth works when users create part of the value for each other.
Choose fewer channels and measure real outcomes
An early startup does not need a blog, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, ads, affiliates, Discord and Product Hunt at the same time. Pick one or two channels that fit the audience and measure the path to a business result: qualified visits, activation, revenue, retention or referrals.
No marketing channel can permanently compensate for a project that people do not understand, use or want to recommend.
