Borrowed audiences, partnerships, integrations, platforms, content, direct sales and referrals.
First define what you are actually looking for
“I need more audience” is too vague. Do you need ten early testers, one enterprise buyer, a thousand free users, paying subscribers or people who will share the project? The answer changes the channel completely.
Borrow an audience before you build your own
When you have no distribution, the fastest path is often to appear in front of someone else’s existing audience. That can mean creators, niche newsletters, professional communities, podcasts, schools, associations, events or a company that already serves the same customer.
Influencer collaboration is not limited to lifestyle Instagram posts. In B2B or a narrow niche, one trusted specialist with a small relevant audience can be more valuable than a large generic account.
Partnerships work when the customer overlaps but the offer does not
A strong partner already has trust and distribution in the segment you need, while your project gives their audience an additional result. Integrations are a particularly powerful version of this: instead of persuading people to discover a new ecosystem, build something useful inside the ecosystem they already use.
Platforms can be the first distribution channel
You do not always need to begin with your own SaaS and your own traffic. App stores, plugin marketplaces, ecommerce marketplaces, template platforms and industry catalogues already contain people with purchase intent. A smaller digital project can be a practical way to learn the market before building a standalone platform.
Build an owned audience over time
Borrowed distribution is useful, but it can disappear when an algorithm, platform policy or partner changes. Email lists, useful content, direct customer relationships and a recognised brand are slower to build but become assets you control more directly.
Direct outreach is underrated in the early stage
When you need the first 10 or 50 users, personal outreach can beat a marketing campaign. Find people who clearly fit the target, refer to the specific problem they have and ask for a small next step. The objective is not automation; it is learning which message and segment responds.
Referrals are strongest when sharing is natural
A referral programme works when users already receive enough value to recommend the project. Better still, the project can contain a natural loop: collaboration, shared output, invitations, embedded results or something that another person must see to complete the task.
Choose channels based on the customer, not fashion
SEO is useful when people search for the problem. Communities are useful when the audience already gathers around the topic. Partnerships are useful when trust matters. Direct sales works when each customer is valuable. Paid ads work when unit economics can support acquisition cost.
The first customers usually come from a small number of focused channels. Find the one that matches the audience, then deepen it before trying everything at once.
